1.2 Automatically Collected Information
- Usage Data: Information about how you interact with the app, including features used, time spent, and navigation patterns.
- Device Information: Device type, operating system, unique device identifiers, and mobile network information.
- Performance Data: App crashes, error logs, and performance metrics to improve our services.
- Diagnostics & Telemetry (optional): If you opt in from the Language Island app, we collect anonymized session diagnostics through our analytics service providers. These logs may capture touch interactions, navigation events, screen names, device model, OS version, and basic network telemetry. Text inputs, images, and sandboxed or native views are automatically masked before anything is sent, and you can enable or disable diagnostics at any time in Settings → Diagnostics & Telemetry.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the collected information for the following purposes:
- Provide Services: To deliver, maintain, and improve Language Island's features and functionality.
- Personalization: To customize your learning experience based on your progress and preferences.
- Spaced Repetition: To optimize review schedules and show you sentences at the most effective times.
- Communication: To send you updates, notifications, and respond to your inquiries.
- Analytics: To understand usage patterns and improve our app's performance and features.
- Diagnostics Telemetry: To debug crashes, measure feature adoption, and prioritize new functionality. Diagnostics data is never sold or used for advertising and is linked only to an internal identifier—never to your name or email.
- Security: To protect against fraud, abuse, and security threats.
2.1 Legal Bases for Processing (GDPR and Similar Laws)
Where applicable laws (like the GDPR) require a legal basis for processing, we rely on the following:
- Performance of a Contract or Legitimate Interests: To provide core features, personalize your experience, maintain the Service, and ensure security.
- Consent: Diagnostics telemetry is collected only if you opt in (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)). If you decline or later withdraw consent in the app, telemetry collection stops immediately.
3. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell your personal information. We may share your information in the following circumstances:
3.1 Service Providers (Third-Party Processors)
We partner with carefully vetted service providers who help us operate the app and deliver optional features such as diagnostics telemetry. These processors may change over time, but each is bound by strict confidentiality and data-protection obligations.
- Cloud hosting and storage services
- Diagnostics and analytics platforms (optional session replay and telemetry hosting)
- Customer support tools
- Payment processors (for premium features)
When diagnostics telemetry is enabled, our analytics providers process anonymized session data on our behalf solely to help us improve the Service.
3.2 Legal Requirements
We may disclose your information if required by law or in response to valid legal requests by public authorities.
3.3 Business Transfers
If Language Island is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction.
4. Data Retention
We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you services. You can request deletion of your account at any time, and we will delete your personal information within 30 days, except where we need to retain it for legal obligations.
Diagnostics telemetry replays stored by our analytics service providers are retained for up to 30 days (their default retention window) and are then automatically deleted. We may keep aggregated, non-identifiable statistics derived from telemetry for longer to understand trends without storing the underlying recordings.
5. Data Security
We implement appropriate technical and organizational security measures to protect your personal information, including:
- Encryption of data in transit and at rest
- Regular security audits and testing
- Access controls and authentication requirements
- Secure data centers and infrastructure
However, no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

You can also manage your privacy choices directly in the Language Island mobile app. Diagnostics & Telemetry can be toggled on or off at any time, and you can contact [email protected] to request a global opt-out. If you reinstall the app or sign in on a new device, we will ask for your preference again before telemetry resumes.
7. Children's Privacy
Language Island is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us, and we will delete it.
8. International Data Transfers
Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your country of residence. We ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place to protect your information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
