During the Grain Rain season, peonies in Jiangnan bloom competitively, a fine rain nourishes the earth, and the delicate fragrance of soil and flowers drifts in the air.

Cultural Context

谷雨 (Gǔyǔ, Grain Rain) is the 6th and final spring solar term in China's ancient 24-solar-term calendar, falling around April 20. It marks the last spring rains that nourish crops before summer heat arrives. The region of Jiangnan (south of the Yangtze River) is particularly associated with this term — peonies bloom, tea pickers harvest the prized 谷雨茶 (Grain Rain tea), and the air carries the scent of rain on earth (petrichor), known poetically as 泥土的清香.
